Beginner's seminar: Design and stability analysis for retaining walls for excavation pits and underpinnings

The basics of the design of retaining walls according to EAB, EAU and EC 7 and the functionalities of the application GGU-RETAIN are explained. Based on the calculation and the design of retaining walls with GGU-RETAIN, the design of underpinnings for excavation pits is carried out subsequently.

Using case examples, the participants receive input and decision-making aids for setting up suitable calculation models. Options for the input, the evaluation and the presentation of results of the stability calculations and the design of retaining walls and underpinnings are demonstrated using exercises.

The following contents are covered:

• Fundamentals of earth statics, EAB, EAU, EC 7
• Basic functions and program settings
• Creation of systems with different types of retaining walls, soil stratification, characteristic soil properties
• Earth pressure approaches (DIN 4085, active/passive earth pressure, Culmann)
• Earth pressure from traffic and live loads, berms
• Calculations according to Blum and with embedded toes
• Earth pressure redistribution according to EAB and EAU
• Design according to EC 2 and EC 3 (a.o. sheet pile wall, soldier pile wall)
• Design of retaining wall elements (a.o. struts, anchors, waling)
• Water pressure approaches (hydrostatic and with flow conduits)
• Stability verifications (a.o. heave, deep seated stability, hydraulic heave)
• Calculation of underpinnings
• Export to GGU-STABILITY for general stability analyses

Requirements/knowledge:

• Basic knowledge of geotechnics and earth statics, EAB, EAU, EC 7, DIN 4085
• Own laptop with pre-installed GGU programs
  (Training licenses are provided by us free of charge)
• A second screen, headset (headphones with microphone) and a stable internet connection with sufficient bandwidth for the video conference
